TRANSITIONS

With the recent publication of my new website, I found it most fitting that my very first blog entry would discuss taking that first step and progressing towards something new.  Transitions can be exciting, but they can also be scary.  Many times it is easy to avoid embarking on a new adventure or striving for a new goal because we are uncertain about how things might turn out.

Here are some guidelines to consider if you find yourself wanting to make a change but it’s been tough for you to take that first step.

1.) Don’t let fears be your guide.

Sometimes we fixate on the reasons we shouldn’t move forward, that we forget the many reasons we should. Whether you are concerned that you might fail, or you find the uncertainty of trying something new unnerving, try not to get caught up in negative thinking.

If you’re fearing failure, don’t forget that it’s also highly likely that you will succeed!  Actually picture yourself achieving whatever you set out to do.   If you still find yourself letting thoughts of failure pop into your head, remember that failure isn’t necessarily a terrible thing, anyhow.  Failing at something helps to build character and can keep you humble.  Furthermore, people often learn from their failures and use them to make more informed decisions in their future.

If you’re fearing the uncertainty, recall that nothing in life is really for sure. Uncertainty can be a GREAT thing, too!  Imagine how boring things would be if we actually knew everything that was going to happen in life. The unknown that lies ahead may actually be full of wonderful possibilities, after all, there’s a reason you are feeling you want to make a change from your present circumstances.

2.) Have a support system.

It’s perfectly okay to ask for help and seek the support of people who care about you.  Family and friends can offer a listening ear, and a life coach can also be a sounding board. Life coaches can help you identify what types of things may be holding you back from making the change you want, as well as offer guidance in excelling forward.  Not only that, but a life coach can offer an unbiased view of your circumstances. Professional life coaches are trained in helping others achieve success.

3.) Focus on your past achievements.

If you’re nervous about moving forward because of the unknown, recall times from your past where you experienced uncertainty but you forged ahead.  Identify what valuable lessons you learned and what you accomplished by moving forward in those times.  Reflecting on how you succeeded in your past can help you gain confidence to get through the present transition period in your life.

4.) Remember that change is normal.

Life is dynamic and ever-changing, which is part of what makes it so wonderful. Everyone who has ever made a change has most likely experienced the same feelings you currently are.  Embrace this idea the best you can, and accept that it’s perfectly okay to feel nervous or uncomfortable during times of change.

5.) Take care of yourself.

Since transitions can be both exciting and stressful, don’t let that pull you away from your healthy routines.  Do something for yourself each and every day, whether it be taking a walk, reading a book, or visiting with a friend.  Making sure that you’re consistently taking care of yourself helps to lower your stress levels during times of change and transition.
